“To bed they creep,
By whistling winds soon lullʼd asleep.”
– Traditional, East Riding of Yorkshire
Amidst The Folklore Society’s extensive archive, one particular volume called out to Elms: Examples of Printed Folk-Lore Concerning the East Riding of Yorkshire. This charming volume, collected and edited by one Mrs Gutch in 1912, prompted Elms’ research into the folklore of Britain — this line of research would eventually lead to the maritime lore and sea shanties that informed Bethia, the commission for New Music Biennial and Hull City of Culture 2017. By Whistling Winds Soon Lullʼd Asleep marks the first work in a series of musical works that Elms has written for the guitar.
